Ordinance 2020-2002 Amendment Relating to Short Term Rentals:

Short Term Rental of secondary properties has always been illegal in Michiana Shores.

The new Ordinance allows for legal rental of secondary residences short term with a zoning variance and approved permit subject to occupancy limits and other noted provisions.

No property can be rented without a permit.  Failure to have a permit with continued rental will result in a fine of $2500.00.     

All legally compliant short term rentals will be issue a high visibility window permit that must be displayed to avoid a citation, and to inform residents of the approved status.  The Permit will include a name and 24 HR emergency number visible for all to contact if issues arise.

As a part of the process used in applying for the Short Term Rental Permit, you must apply to the BZA of the Town of Michiana Shores for a Variance.

Extremely Important News…

There is NO PARKING allowed ON ROADWAYS. Because of the narrow streets, cars must be parked completely off of roadways for safety purposes. Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles have difficulty navigating the narrow roads. Again, you must not park with even 2 wheels on the roadway. This is an enforced ordinance.

 

Building Permits:

Before picking up a hammer or a nail, you MUST contact Building Commissioner Steve Thomas (who will be the contact until the building department has re-organized). This includes any type of building: new home, remodeling, sheds, fences, anything!

New Ordinance!!!

NOTHING is to be placed on the roads (pavement). No yard debris, leaves, tree limbs, snow, ice etc. Please inform your landscape and snow removal providers. There is a FINE!

 

SIGNS: Contractor signs may appear on your property while work is being conducted.  After work is complete, these signs must be removed.  All signs MUST be outside the Town Right of Way/Public Utility Easement, usually 10, even 15 in from the edge of the pavement.  The actual Sign Ordinance is available in the Town office.

 

Spring Cleaning Your Property

As you clean up your property this spring, please do not plan on dumping the waste on any of the overgrown, uninhabited properties around Michiana Shores. As a responsible homeowner and citizen of Michiana Shores, DO NOT DUMP!
(There is a fine of $100 for each violation.)

Dogs Rule! (kind'a)...
With many summer resident dogs back to enjoy the summer in our community, they must follow rules too!
  • All dogs must be controlled by a leash (not to exceed 8 feet). The existence of dogs and cats running at large without restraint within the Town and the barking, yelping, howling or other noises will be determined as a public nuisance and a menance to health, safety and welfare of the Townspeople, and owners will be fined.
  • Owner of person in control of any domestic animal must remove all animal waste or feces.
Fireworks
  • It is YOUR responsibility to become aware of what fireworks (IC 22-11-14-1) are permitted. All times listed here are Central Time.
  • The approved fireworks are permitted ONLY from June 29 to July 3 between 5 pm and (2) hours after sunset.
  • The approved fireworks are permitted ONLY on July 4 from 10 am til midnight.
  • The approved fireworks are permitted ONLY from July 5 to July 9 between 5 pm and (2) hours after sunset.
  • ANY VIOLATION of this ordinance shall be subject to a $100 fine. A second occurance will be fined $250. A fine of $2500 will be imposed for a third occurance. All fines to be paid to the Town Clerk as an Ordinance Violation

Dogs Rule! (kind'a)...
Dogs on the beach in the Michiana, Michigan:
  • No person shall permit any domestic animal whether under restraint or not, on any public beach in Michiana Michigan between the hours of 11:00 am to 6:00 pm(EST) from May 1st thru October 1st.
  • All dogs must be controlled by a leash (not to exceed ten feet).
  • Owner or person in control of any domestic animal must remove all animal waste or feces or other public property.
Beach Bon Fire Permits
  • If you are going to have a bonfire on the beach at Stop 37, you must acquire a permit from the Village of Michiana MI.
  • Please consult with the Village on 'do's and dont's'
  • Office hours: Mon-Fri - 9:00am-4:00pm (EST)
  • If you need a permit after hours or weekends, please leave a message for the Michiana Police at 269-469-1884. They will call you back!
